How does it work?
You fill the top with pellets. Purina advises you to use their branded Breeze pellets, but plenty of cat owners are using the system just fine with other, less expensive pellets.
The bottom of the litter box has a tray that you can slide out. Put a Breeze pad in the tray and slide it back in. Once your cat pees in the litter box, the urine will seep through to the pad, which absorbs it and traps the odor.
Feces will just lay on top of the litter, so you can easily scoop that out when you see it. A scoop is included in the package! The pad, however, lasts for a whole week. And the pellets need replacing only once a month. Nice!
The litter box itself is designed specifically for larger cats. The entry is low enough for arthritic cats to step in. And the box is roomy enough to fit larger breeds comfortably.
If you decide to try the Tidy Cats Breeze system for your cats, be mindful of your cat’s behavior when he’s on the box. Some cats like to eat the pellets, with disastrous consequences. The pellets get stuck in the colon and can cause serious intestinal blockages. The solution is quite simple, though: just use different pellets.
Also be sure to check the integrity of the litter box when you set it up and during your first few weeks of using it. One litter box that lives up to its name is the Petmate Giant. Its dimensions are 26’’x18’’x10’’, large enough even for bigger breeds like Ragdoll and Bengal cats.
The Petmate Giant litter box is less suitable for overweight cats and seniors with achy joints. Even if they can get in, they will have a hard time getting out, as the rim is fairly high all the way round.
The advantage of this high 360° rim is that it will catch your cat’s urine, no matter what side he is coming from. Some cats nicely turn around to face the front after they get on the litter box, while others like to just drop where they land. No matter your cat’s habits, the Petmate Giant has got you covered.
Not having a low entry also means that any litter you put into it is sure to stay there. Spillage is minimal with this litter box. You can fill it up with as much as 30 lbs. of litter, should you choose to do so. I would advise against it, because that’s a lot of litter to dig through when you clean it. But that’s just me.
Another major advantage of the Petmate Giant is that you can use disposable litter box liners with it, which I absolutely recommend. The box has some inconvenient ridges that clumping litter likes to stick to. A litter box liner will prevent that.
Just put the bag in the litter box, fold it over the sides and pour the litter on top. Again, I wouldn’t use too much litter, since you are still going to have to lift the liner out of the litter box at some point.

Best Low Entry Litter Box: Nature’s Miracle High-Sided Litter Box
Nature’s Miracle High-Sided litter box is very similar to the Petmate Giant, but solves a few annoyances we had with that one.
For one, it has a completely smooth design. No ridges that collect cat litter and bacteria. It even has an antibacterial, non-stick coating to ensure maximum hygiene. Unfortunately, the coating does seem to wear off over time. Use a non-corrosive detergent or all-purpose cleaner when cleaning the litter box to make it last longer.
At 23’’x18’’x11’’, this Nature’s Miracle litter box is the smallest on the list. Still, it is quite a bit larger than an average litter box and should comfortably fit medium to large sized cats.
The best feature of this litter box and the reason why it definitely deserves its place among the best litter boxes for large male cats is its truely low entry. Even the least mobile of cats will stroll into this litter box without problems.
Of course, the low entrance does mean that you can’t put too much litter in it or it will spill out as your cat starts digging. However, it is not a bad thing to use less litter. It’s better for the environment and more hygienic for your cat, because it forces you to clean the litter box more often.
Use the Nature’s Miracle litter box in combination with a non-tracking litter and a quality cat litter mat. This will at the very least prevent that spilled litter from tracking all over your house.

Best Covered Litter Box: Petphabet Covered Litter Box
It can be a challenge to find a hooded litter box that fits a large, messy cat. The Petphabet litter box is the only hooded litter box that made it onto our list. In our opinion, it is the best covered litter box for large male cats, both in terms of space and odor-control.
The Petphabet comes in as the second largest litter box on our list, with dimensions of 25’’x19’’x17’’. I’m especially impressed by the height, even though it does mean that this litter box is not for cats with limited mobility.
The cover, or hood, is perfect for large male cats that like to lift their but up in the air and just spray everything behind them. It’s clear and has a big opening for your cat to get in through, so it doesn’t feel as claustrophobic as most covered litter boxes. And you can easily see when it’s time to clean it.
Speaking of cleaning it, that shouldn’t be too much of an ordeal with the Petphabet litter box. The cover is easy to remove and the whole thing is very lightweight, though maybe a bit flimsy. There are some ridges in the bottom half, but these are up high enough to stay relatively clean. Just don’t add too much litter.
One thing to watch out for after you have cleaned it is that you place the hood back on correctly. If you’re not careful and accidentally leave a gap between the cover and the pan you can end up with some serious leakage when your boy gets busy in there.
Other than that, this colorful litter box from Nature’s Miracle does a perfect job in keeping the litter and everything that comes with it where it belongs. And it’s not a complete eyesore either.

Best High Back Litter Box: Petmate Hi-Back Open Litter Pan
The Petmate Hi-Back caters both to arthritic cats and to cats that like to turn around and spray. The low front is easy to step over and the high back will catch everything your cat throws at it.
The top of the litter box measures 23’’x18’’x12’’, which is a nice size for even the bigger of house cats. The round corners are a plus. If you use a clumping litter you will undoubtedly be familiar with litter getting cemented in the corners of your litter box. That won’t happen with this one.
The plastic is coated with a non-stick material that makes cleaning it even easier. You can also use litter box liners with it, if you’re not into scooping and cleaning. Convenient!
On the downside (pun intended), the sloping of the corners does waste a lot of precious space. If your cat is of a really big breed, like Maine Coon, he might not be comfortable squatting down in that narrow space. And if he decides to step on the sides, it will more than likely tip over.
Nevertheless, for medium to large sized cats the Petmate Hi-Back works well. The shape and minor claustrophobia-inducing sides actually seem to encourage cats to turn around after getting in. So if you’re looking to excerpt a bit more control over where your boy drops (or not drops) his hiney, give this litter box a try.

Our Favorite: Purina Tidy Cats Breeze XL Litter Box
Our favorite litter box for large male cats is the Tidy Cats Breeze XL litter box. Not only is it the biggest litter box we could find, the odor-control is better than any we’ve seen, eh, smelled before. And male cats can produce quite the stank. Yes, it’s a bit expensive. But you can easily replace the expensive litter with a more affordable alternative and it will still work.
Litter Box For Large Male Cat Requirements
Trying to put a large cat on a regular litter box feels like trying to get an elephant through a keyhole. It’s just not going to work. On top of that, male cats have their own set of bathroom habits that can be a nightmare to deal with. So you start looking for a solution. But what exactly should you be looking for in a litter box if you have a large, male cat?
Size
Regular litter boxes are too small for large cat breeds like Ragdolls, Maine Coons and Bengal cats. Even some of our more chubby house felines can start to feel cramped in a litter box made for lean kitties. A litter box should be big enough for your cat to completely fit in and still be able to turn around. Any smaller and he will defecate over the edge, guaranteed.
Height
One habit every male cat guardian gets confronted with at some point is spraying. Female cats do it too, but to a much, much lesser extent.
It also doesn’t matter if your boy has been neutered or not. Spraying is a normal cat behavior meant to mark their territory and claim ownership. It’s natural for your cat to do this in the litter box, which is undoubtedly part of his territory.
And it’s not much of a problem, until your cat decides to do his spraying with his behind lifted up in the air. Everything will be covered for you to clean up. And the larger the cat, the bigger the mess.
The best solution is to look for a litter box with high sides. This way, all urine is caught in the box, no matter how high your cat lifts his rear.
Material
When it comes to material, your best bet is to go with a plastic litter box. Plastic is nonporous, so it doesn’t absorb odor. It is also easy to clean with normal detergents and cleaning products.
If you can, choose a litter box with an antibacterial coating. Most of these coatings are also non-stick, which is a nice bonus for those of us who don’t like cleaning so much (me!). You might see these litter boxes labeled as ‘Microban’, which is just a brand name of a certain antimicrobial coating.
In our search for large litter pans we also came across some stainless steel litter boxes. Although stainless steel is relatively easy to clean and considered to be fairly hygienic, I wouldn’t recommend it for use in a litter box. Prolonged exposure to highly acidic cat urine does affect the surface of the material and will leave it looking less rather messy. And that’s not even mentioning the weight.
Front entry
Larger cats are unfortunately prone to developing mobility issues like arthritis. Cats with arthritis can have problems going to the bathroom, because they simply can’t get into the litter box. The rim is too high for them to step over with their sore joints. Instead, he will start to drop his gifts right next to the box.
The same problem can occur with cats who have been declawed. Their paws ache and stepping over the edge onto the rough pellets can be too much for them to handle.
A litter box with a low front entry solves much of these problems. Your cat can simply walk in, do his thing, and walk out. He doesn’t have to put any unnecessary pressure on his paws and limbs.
Covered Versus Uncovered
Whether you should go for a covered or an uncovered, open litter box is left for you to decide.
On the one hand, a hood can definitely help to keep your walls and floors clean, especially if your boy is an enthusiastic sprayer. It will also help to contain the odors that will most certainly rise up to pierce your nostrils from an open litter box.
